We finally had some clouds in the sky this morning. What a difference they make! This morning those clouds lit up beautifully just before sunrise over the calm and partially frozen waters of Sprague Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park.

If you are planning to go hiking in Rocky, remember to bring your micro-spikes (http://tinyurl.com/m8ubkla) as the trails are starting to get quite icy.

Yesterday, I posted an image of a tree with a dramatic red sky behind it. This morning I've posted another image of this same tree from closer up just as the sun crested the horizon. It is amazing what a difference a change of perspective and 20 minutes makes.

Gallery Notes: Please be aware that my Estes Park gallery will be closed tomorrow (Thursday) due to staffing issues. We will be back open again on Friday. Also, if you are thinking of buying one of our fine art plaques for Christmas, the orders need to be in by Saturday for us to get it to you on-time. Unfortunately, it is already too late to order any matted plaques as they take 2 weeks to produce.

Wishing you all a great day!

We had a beautiful start to the day here in Rocky Mountain National Park this morning. At this time of year the alpine tundra is filled with wildflowers while the higher mountains still hold on to their snow.

Happy Monday from Rocky Mountain National Park! It is another blue-bird sky morning here in the park. While the rest of you are baking in the heat, we're expecting a high of 61 degrees today up at Bear Lake. If you can't get away, then I hope this photo from this morning will at least help to briefly transport you here.

It is a beautiful day up here in Rocky Mountain National Park. The birds are singing joyously in the warm spring air and the aspen leaves are fresh and green. I saw numerous elk, lots of mule deer and a number of turkeys. The park roads also seemed to be unusually quiet this morning. It is hard to imagine a better start to the day.

This morning the winds were howling and the snow was blowing up in Rocky Mountain National Park. I was planning to go out and ski the fresh powder but because of the winds I decided to instead wimp out and find something to photograph. This morning a full moon set behind the mountains just as the sun was lighting the clouds above. It was a really dramatic scene, especially with all of the blowing snow in the trees. Did any of you get out to see this morning's moonset/sunrise?

On a day much like today, I was out walking through the fields looking for a way to shoot the ice covered aspen and as I came around a bend I found two bull elk grazing. They were as surprised as I was, lifted their heads and watched this strange photographer as he setup his tripod and took their photo.

Yesterday, I posted a link asking for your thoughts on my recently released calendar. If you purchased the calendar, please take a minute and let us know what you think or what you'd like to see improved. Last night I went to enjoy the stars over Glacier Gorge, Rocky Mountain National Park. It was a beautiful night out there with fresh snow on the peaks and trees. You may be wondering why the stars look so strange. It is because this is a 10 minute exposure allowing the earth's rotation to create a sense of movement in the stars. We typically don't notice that the ground beneath our feet is spinning so quickly.

Don't forget to join us tomorrow night for the celebration of Rocky Mountain National Park's 100th anniversary! https://www.facebook.com/events/708541385925806/

This morning was one of those mornings when I stand in awe at the beauty of this place. After yesterday's snowstorm the skies cleared and the first rays of the morning lit the snow covered mountains revealing their majesty and awe inspiring wonder. Though it was a bit chilly out this morning (-2F), it was incredibly beautiful. I need to find a way to play hooky today and spend some more time in the park today.

I just came in from shooting sunrise this morning in Moraine Park. It was a bit nippy, but well worth being out. The elk were all together in giant herds and coyote were running back and forth across the meadow leaving their footprints all over the snow in front of me. Though the wind was gusting quite strongly, there was a peaceful quietness to this new day in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Longs Peak is certainly a spectacular mountain. Standing at over 14,000' it towers over the other mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park. Probably the thing I love most about this mountain is how different it looks from different angles. Over the years I've tried to photograph Longs from just about every angle and the dramatic east face with the Diamond is certainly one of the best perspectives on the mountain.

Well, for the next couple of days I'm in MN visiting family so I'll have to post from the archives. This was from the last sunrise we had before the arrival of winter, at Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. The sky was on fire for several minutes. These special moments are so rare and so wonderful. They are what keep me going out again and again and again in hopes of seeing something like this. I wish you could have been there to see it in person as the colors were unbelievable even when seen in person.

Ok, here's what you missed this morning up at Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. It was a stunning sunrise and probably the last I will shoot this year before ice and snow cover the lake. The clouds you see are from a storm which is moving in to the area bringing much colder temperatures and snow. From what we're hearing, winter arrives in Rocky Mountain National Park later this afternoon.

There are winter like conditions up in the higher parts of Rocky Mountain National Park this morning. This was the view at sunrise from Lake Haiyaha. The word "Haiyaha" is a fun one to pronounce and it is also a very appropriate name for this lake. It comes from the Arapaho language and means "Big Rocks". Anyone who has been to this lake knows that it is surrounded by large boulders.

This morning I thought I’d give you a peek behind the curtain into my world of being a landscape photographer. This is from this past Saturday.

Every few minutes I would wake up with a start and look at the clock. I wanted to get up before my alarm went off at 3am so it wouldn’t wake my wife. It was a terrible night. By 2:30am I had had enough so I crawled out of bed, ate a bowl of oatmeal, threw my clothes on and drove to the Wild Basin trailhead. This was my last chance to get to Thunder Lake before the dreaded time change and possibly before the snows would cover the lake, making it much less photogenic. It was now or never.

I arrived at the trailhead at 3:30. There wasn’t another car anywhere. It was now too cold for campers and no one else would be crazy enough to hike at this time of day. I knew that I was at the trailhead far too early and so I walked very slowly up thetrail.... Mer »

I knew that I was at the trailhead far too early and so I walked very slowly up the trail. As I headed upward I realized that I was cold and tired with an upset stomach to top it off. Above me I could hear the winds howling through the tops of the trees. That meant that it would be quite unpleasant at my destination. What fun that will be to be buffeted by a cold wind and barely be able to keep my tripod steady. Why do I do this? I never like leaving my warm bed for the cold especially in the middle of the night, a windy night. Shouldn’t I have chosen a more suitable career, perhaps something that paid me to spend more time in bed? On I plodded in my dreary state of mind wishing I was somewhere else. The 7 mile hike that I was intentionally taking quite slowly seemed to go by fairly quickly, perhaps too quickly. What would be the good of arriving early and standing in the howling winds waiting for the sun to rise?

At about 6:45 I was there. I sat for a while on a rock in the trees before deciding to go down to the lake and take a peek. When I came around the corner near the old cabin I gasped. The pre-dawn light was already turning the mountains purple. The winds had calmed down and were now just a gentle 10mph breeze. I was so excited I let out a loud “Yes!” which probably wasn’t appreciated by whatever creatures were sleeping in the area. I quickly unpacked my tripod and camera as it was time to get to work.

Over the next 45 minutes the sky put on an amazing show. Normally a great sunrise will last between 1 minute and 7 minutes, but on this morning it just kept going and going and going. The colors were at times so incredible with reds, purples and blues that I couldn’t believe it. As I took photos I wondered if anyone else would believe it either. Thunder Lake is such a challenging place to shoot as there is almost nothing along the shoreline to add foreground interest; so much time was wasted trying to make something of nothing. Regardless of what I captured I was experiencing a morning of incredible beauty in spectacular area of Rocky Mountain National Park. It would be a morning that would be hard to ever forget.

When the light was finally swallowed by the clouds at 7:44, I packed up my gear, ate a bit of food and made my way back down the trail, celebrating what I had seen and experienced while still dreaming of my warm bed. I guess being a landscape photographer isn't so bad after all. ___

I don't have a lot of time this morning so I just quickly grabbed one of the many photos I shot this morning and have posted it here. The clouds were pouring over the top of Longs Peak while turning this cotton candy pink. It was really very pretty.

Wishing you all a great day!

We've had the most wonderful autumn weather of late. It is normally cold and terribly windy at this time of year but this year it is absolutely delightful. This morning I hiked up to this location to catch the sunrise over Longs Peak and Moraine Park. Conditions couldn't have been any better. I hope you were somewhere beautiful for sunrise this morning! :)

This morning I ran up to Lake Bierstadt in Rocky Mountain National Park for sunrise. It was windy and pretty chilly, but still a beautiful way to start the day.

We had unusual conditions here in Rocky Mountain National Park this morning. I wasn't even planning to go out until the very last minute. When I drove into the park and saw the low-lying clouds, fresh snow and lack of wind I realized that I needed to get to Dream Lake as quickly as possible. I raced up there and captured just a couple of shots before the clouds completely obscured the scene.

What a spectacular morning we had at Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park this morning. I couldn't have wished for better conditions!

Last night I had the chance to get out into the tundra for sunset along the ancient Ute Trail. It was so quiet and peaceful up there with the only noise being the occasional bugling of elk in the distance.

It is finally here!!! After nearly a decade of dreaming and hard work I am today releasing my new book Wild Light: A Celebration of Rocky Mountain National Park. In this book I cover nearly every corner of this amazing national park through both imagery and text. This hardcover book has 224 pages and is filled with large color photographs showing the park at its most dramatic and beautiful moments. These are accompanied by writings which are meant, not only to inform, but to draw one into the beauty of this wilderness.

Today is also the day when the National Park Service begins celebrating the first 100 years of Rocky Mountain National Park. It is a place with which most people are acquainted but which few people really know. Through this book enter into the park as you've never seen it and come to recognize the precious jewel that it is.
