They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to August 15th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting JAugust 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday  #sharedcircles  #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle  #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle  #handpickedcircles Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circle2013-08-19 11:01:4827713512

Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday #handpickedcircles   #sharedcircles#sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles#pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle#thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle  Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes .  Thanks for your cooperation.2013-06-19 10:19:33278727

We finally had some clouds in the sky this morning. What a difference they make! This morning those clouds lit up beautifully just before sunrise over the calm and partially frozen waters of Sprague Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park.

If you are planning to go hiking in Rocky, remember to bring your micro-spikes (http://tinyurl.com/m8ubkla) as the trails are starting to get quite icy.

Yesterday, I posted an image of a tree with a dramatic red sky behind it. This morning I've posted another image of this same tree from closer up just as the sun crested the horizon. It is amazing what a difference a change of perspective and 20 minutes makes.

Gallery Notes: Please be aware that my Estes Park gallery will be closed tomorrow (Thursday) due to staffing issues. We will be back open again on Friday. Also, if you are thinking of buying one of our fine art plaques for Christmas, the orders need to be in by Saturday for us to get it to you on-time. Unfortunately, it is already too late to order any matted plaques as they take 2 weeks to produce.

Wishing you all a great day!

I just came in from shooting sunrise this morning in Moraine Park. It was a bit nippy, but well worth being out. The elk were all together in giant herds and coyote were running back and forth across the meadow leaving their footprints all over the snow in front of me. Though the wind was gusting quite strongly, there was a peaceful quietness to this new day in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Longs Peak is certainly a spectacular mountain. Standing at over 14,000' it towers over the other mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park. Probably the thing I love most about this mountain is how different it looks from different angles. Over the years I've tried to photograph Longs from just about every angle and the dramatic east face with the Diamond is certainly one of the best perspectives on the mountain.

Well, for the next couple of days I'm in MN visiting family so I'll have to post from the archives. This was from the last sunrise we had before the arrival of winter, at Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. The sky was on fire for several minutes. These special moments are so rare and so wonderful. They are what keep me going out again and again and again in hopes of seeing something like this. I wish you could have been there to see it in person as the colors were unbelievable even when seen in person.

Ok, here's what you missed this morning up at Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. It was a stunning sunrise and probably the last I will shoot this year before ice and snow cover the lake. The clouds you see are from a storm which is moving in to the area bringing much colder temperatures and snow. From what we're hearing, winter arrives in Rocky Mountain National Park later this afternoon.

There are winter like conditions up in the higher parts of Rocky Mountain National Park this morning. This was the view at sunrise from Lake Haiyaha. The word "Haiyaha" is a fun one to pronounce and it is also a very appropriate name for this lake. It comes from the Arapaho language and means "Big Rocks". Anyone who has been to this lake knows that it is surrounded by large boulders.

This morning I thought I’d give you a peek behind the curtain into my world of being a landscape photographer. This is from this past Saturday.

Every few minutes I would wake up with a start and look at the clock. I wanted to get up before my alarm went off at 3am so it wouldn’t wake my wife. It was a terrible night. By 2:30am I had had enough so I crawled out of bed, ate a bowl of oatmeal, threw my clothes on and drove to the Wild Basin trailhead. This was my last chance to get to Thunder Lake before the dreaded time change and possibly before the snows would cover the lake, making it much less photogenic. It was now or never.

I arrived at the trailhead at 3:30. There wasn’t another car anywhere. It was now too cold for campers and no one else would be crazy enough to hike at this time of day. I knew that I was at the trailhead far too early and so I walked very slowly up thetrail.... Mer »

This morning I thought I’d give you a peek behind the curtain into my world of being a landscape photographer. This is from this past Saturday.

I knew that I was at the trailhead far too early and so I walked very slowly up the trail. As I headed upward I realized that I was cold and tired with an upset stomach to top it off. Above me I could hear the winds howling through the tops of the trees. That meant that it would be quite unpleasant at my destination. What fun that will be to be buffeted by a cold wind and barely be able to keep my tripod steady. Why do I do this? I never like leaving my warm bed for the cold especially in the middle of the night, a windy night. Shouldn’t I have chosen a more suitable career, perhaps something that paid me to spend more time in bed? On I plodded in my dreary state of mind wishing I was somewhere else. The 7 mile hike that I was intentionally taking quite slowly seemed to go by fairly quickly, perhaps too quickly. What would be the good of arriving early and standing in the howling winds waiting for the sun to rise?

At about 6:45 I was there. I sat for a while on a rock in the trees before deciding to go down to the lake and take a peek. When I came around the corner near the old cabin I gasped. The pre-dawn light was already turning the mountains purple. The winds had calmed down and were now just a gentle 10mph breeze. I was so excited I let out a loud “Yes!” which probably wasn’t appreciated by whatever creatures were sleeping in the area. I quickly unpacked my tripod and camera as it was time to get to work.

Over the next 45 minutes the sky put on an amazing show. Normally a great sunrise will last between 1 minute and 7 minutes, but on this morning it just kept going and going and going. The colors were at times so incredible with reds, purples and blues that I couldn’t believe it. As I took photos I wondered if anyone else would believe it either. Thunder Lake is such a challenging place to shoot as there is almost nothing along the shoreline to add foreground interest; so much time was wasted trying to make something of nothing. Regardless of what I captured I was experiencing a morning of incredible beauty in spectacular area of Rocky Mountain National Park. It would be a morning that would be hard to ever forget.

When the light was finally swallowed by the clouds at 7:44, I packed up my gear, ate a bit of food and made my way back down the trail, celebrating what I had seen and experienced while still dreaming of my warm bed. I guess being a landscape photographer isn't so bad after all. ___

We've had the most wonderful autumn weather of late. It is normally cold and terribly windy at this time of year but this year it is absolutely delightful. This morning I hiked up to this location to catch the sunrise over Longs Peak and Moraine Park. Conditions couldn't have been any better. I hope you were somewhere beautiful for sunrise this morning! :)

We had unusual conditions here in Rocky Mountain National Park this morning. I wasn't even planning to go out until the very last minute. When I drove into the park and saw the low-lying clouds, fresh snow and lack of wind I realized that I needed to get to Dream Lake as quickly as possible. I raced up there and captured just a couple of shots before the clouds completely obscured the scene.

I raced up there and captured just a couple of shots before the clouds completely obscured the scene. ___

It is finally here!!! After nearly a decade of dreaming and hard work I am today releasing my new book Wild Light: A Celebration of Rocky Mountain National Park. In this book I cover nearly every corner of this amazing national park through both imagery and text. This hardcover book has 224 pages and is filled with large color photographs showing the park at its most dramatic and beautiful moments. These are accompanied by writings which are meant, not only to inform, but to draw one into the beauty of this wilderness.

Today is also the day when the National Park Service begins celebrating the first 100 years of Rocky Mountain National Park. It is a place with which most people are acquainted but which few people really know. Through this book enter into the park as you've never seen it and come to recognize the precious jewel that it is.

Over these last 10 years of photographing Rocky Mountain National Park, I've had so many incredible experiences. One of the most exhilarating was one evening while standing on the summit of Hallett Peak at sunset. Thick clouds came right up to my feet. It felt as if I was flying or had entered into a magical world. Then I looked down onto this sea of clouds and noticed a figure surrounded by a beautiful rainbow. At first I thought I was seeing something otherworldly and it took me a moment to realize that this was me, my shadow and a rainbow around me. I'd never even heard of anything like this before. I waved and danced in disbelief.

As I stood there the clouds drifted back and forth, but never higher than my feet and as I looked behind me I could see the sun setting behind the Never Summer Mountains while lighting up Taylor Peak nearby and also part of Andrews and Ptarmigan Mountains... Mer »

What an amazing evening this was!

After returning home I eventually learned that this event is a known phenomena called a "Brocken Spectre". You can read more about it at this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brocken_spectre___

One of the things I've realized about beauty in recent years is that it is quiet and perhaps even a bit shy. It doesn't stand on the street corner and scream for attention, but instead when everyone is tired and turns to head home then beauty reveals its splendor. It actually seems to be present almost everywhere in our world, though hidden just enough that we won't see it unless we are paying attention. It is easy to be captivated by the loud and brashness of the ugliness and evil in our world and it can be easy to believe that this is the only true reality, but mystery, wonder and beauty surround us as well. To which voice are we paying attention?

There is beauty to be found nearly everywhere we look, if we have eyes to see. It is often much easier to notice all that is wrong with the world, but there is also so much that is good in the world if we will take the extra effort to notice. Focusing on the darkness leads us into dark places, but noticing the beauty enables us to be people who bring hope and healing into this world. Long ago it was written, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

I just returned home from this morning's hike up to Bluebird Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. The sunrise was amazing with wonderful pinks in the sky and the Ouzel Peak glowed an intense red/orange. It was a real treat. I had hoped to catch the reflection of Ouzel Peak on the lake but the wind was blowing too hard so I crawled down into the outlet gully to capture this instead.

Well, after a rough night sleep I peeked out the window at about 5:30 this morning and saw that despite thick rain clouds there was a small crack on the eastern horizon. I jumped out of bed, put some clothes on and ran out the door. I arrived at the Beaver Meadows entrance station in Rocky Mountain National Park unsure of where the action would happen, so I just stayed right there. Then a couple of minutes later I saw one red beam develop over the park. Slowly it grew to be a full rainbow while dark storm clouds moved in behind it. It was a very dramatic and beautiful start to the day. Remember that sometimes the darkest and stormiest times produce the most brilliant moments of beauty.

Many of us who have been to Rocky Mountain National Park have seen Ypsilon Mountain towering over Horseshoe Park, but how many of us have seen it from the north side? This view is perhaps even more majestic. I think Ypsilon is one of the most beautiful mountains in Rocky and never more so than when bathed in the warm light of the morning or in this case evening.

The path of life twists and turns. It is impossible to anticipate what lies around the next bend. In many ways we are walking into the fog. We know that steep climbs and dangerous descents lie somewhere ahead as well as sorrow and deep pain, yet these are not the end and they are not the meaning of our journey. That mysterious diffused light that calls us onward seems to hint that there is something hidden, something healing waiting for us at the end of it all. Encouraging us at almost every turn there is beauty and wonder. It cries out from the edges of the path, “Don’t be afraid.”

This image was taken last night up on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.

This morning I spent sunrise up on Trail Ridge Road. It was quite brisk with temps in the 40s and the wind blowing about 15mph. I found myself wearing my winter hat, gloves, and down jacket. Now, that's the perfect way to begin a summer day. The flowers up there are beautiful and made a perfect foreground for Longs Peak.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a title for this one?

Last night I ran up to the top of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park for sunset. There was heavy smoke filling the skies from wildfires in the far north of Canada which had blown down. It was so thick that I couldn't even see Longs Peak from up there! However, smoke makes for colorful sunsets and so I made sure to watch the sun set behind the Never Summer Mountains as it lit up tundra wildflowers.

While there are no magical properties in the water itself, such exquisite beauty and the roaring sound of rushing water somehow brings a sense of healing into our trouble hearts, allowing us to perceive that in beauty is the answer to life.

Longs Peak with its unusual flat top is the tallest mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park. Towering over all other peaks in the area it can be seen from Denver to Fort Collins as well as from all over the park. On this evening it was playing hide and seek with me, disappearing for 5 or 10 minutes and then briefly appearing again as thick clouds drifted by.
