Here is a photo that I took this morning in Cerro Azul, Veracruz from the rooftop of the house. (around 9:30 am) I observed an early liftoff of Mississippi Kites - Ictinia Mississippiensis. In one single "thermal" from tree top level spiraling upwards some 350 meteres, I calculate that there were 2,000 +
Mississippi Kites. In the photo below there are 189 Mississippi Kites. This is the view with my Canon fixed 400mm lens, I added extra contrast in photoshop and added a yellow dot on each Mississippi kite in order to count them. I have included the image in its original size should anyone choose to download it.

A short clip of hawks swirling above the house here in Cerro Azul, Veracruz Mexico. The quality is not great but the majority are Broad-winged Hawks mixed with a few Swainson's Hawks. These hawks are "kettleing in a thermal"(a column of warm rising air), gaining altitude. Once altitude is gained, they will "stream" out in a line gradually dropping until they find another thermal and will once again repeat the process. The hawks are able to cover large distances in a day with a minimum of energy. These hawks are migrating north to their breeding grounds in the USA and Canada, most have spent the winter months in South America.

Fantastic hawk migration this morning here in Cerro Azul!
I observed over 12,000 Broad-wing and Swainson's Hawks swirling in the sky above the house in the lapse of 30 minutes. A great "lift off"and the day has just begun. This is why I love Veracruz :-) I love the hawkwatch.

Yesterday was a perfect day to observe migrating birds of prey here in Veracruz. I observed and nice "lift" raptors 9:30 am (approx. 2,500) In the afternoon 4pm - 6:30 we had low thermals and lines of Turkey vultures, Swainson Hawks and Broad-winged hawks. I spent most of the day photographing and observing birds today. Finally a nice push of raptor migration here in Veracruz Mexico! Between 3:30pm and 5pm I counted 8,251 Migrating birds of prey. Turkey Vutures 4,832, Swainson's hawks 2,112, Broad-winged Hawks 1,301, Cooper's Hawks 2, Osprey 2 and Zone-tailed hawks 2. The spring migration is underway.... simply magnificent!
